Artificial Light at Night Alters the Physiology and Behavior of Western Mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis)

چکیده

Human population growth and its associated effects on the environment contribute to rapid decrease of biodiversity worldwide. Artificial light at night (ALAN) is an anthropogenic pollutant that increasing with spread urbanization may declines. ALAN alters migration patterns birds, communication in frogs, impacts reproduction, behavior, physiology multiple other taxa. However, most studies are based terrestrial systems, overall, freshwater organisms poorly understood. We investigated how affects physiology, reproduction a widespread, tolerant species fish. Gambusia affinis small livebearing fish often found urban streams. exposed groups female G. either natural cycle or constant 24-h laboratory for 60 days. In another experiment, we same treatments outdoor mesocosms 32 exposure lowered glucose levels brain decreased swimming activity, but had no effect cortisol release rates, survival, growth. This research strengthened by measuring metrics response incorporating both field component which confirm similar results. These results suggest this behaviorally adjust rather than modulate their endocrine stress response.

Trophic plasticity and fine-grained resource variation in populations of western mosquitofish, Gambusia affinis

Hypothesis: Fish will exhibit morphological plasticity in response to how (food type: live vs. attached food) and where (orientation: surface, mid-water, benthic) they are fed. Fine-grained resource variation (daily rotation of orientations) will produce intermediate morphologies. Population differences will reflect responses to both predators and resources. Organism: Offspring from two populat...

Use of microsatellite paternity analysis to determine male mating success in the western mosquitofish, Gambusia affinis

I tested the effects of male body size on male mating behavior and reproductive success in the western mosquitofish, Gambusia affinis. In two separate behavioral experiments (male–male competition and no-competition), I tested the predictions that (1) larger males out-compete smaller males for mates and (2) small males increase their number of mating attempts in the absence of a larger competit...

Acute toxicity of mosquitocidal compounds to young mosquitofish, Gambusia affinis.

Toxicity of Florida mosquito larvicides and adulticides to 3-5 day old Gambusia affinis was determined in the laboratory. After 24-h exposure, the larvicides, temephos, fenoxycarb and petroleum distillates had LC50 values of 5.60, 1.05 and 593.4 ppm, respectively. After 24 h the adulticides resmethrin, fenthion, naled and malathion had LC50 values of 0.007, 2.94, 3.50 and 12.68 ppm, respectivel...

Helminth parasites of mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) were surveyed in Bayou Traverse, a waterway in the LaBranche wetlands of southeastern Louisiana, U.S.A. In total, 1,255 parasites belonging to 8 species were collected and identified, including Ascocotyle ampullacea, Ascocotyle mcintoshi, Ascocotyle tenuicollis, Phagicola diminuta, Phagicola sp., Echinochasmus swartzi, Posthodiplostomum mini...
